What is Opera dei Pupi?

Opera dei Pupi is the traditional Sicilian theatre of armored puppets manipulated primarily through rigid metal rods and wires.

Its recognizable form developed in the first decades of the nineteenth century, although the stories it performs are much older and draw heavily on medieval and Renaissance chivalric literature.

Opera dei Pupi is not itself a medieval Sicilian theatre. Its story world is medieval, but the theatrical tradition Sicilians recognize today emerged mainly in the nineteenth century.

The word pupo refers to one of the theatrical figures used in this tradition. A pupo is therefore more specific than a generic puppet or decorative marionette.

A complete theatrical culture

The puppets themselves are only one part of the tradition

Story

Stories of Charlemagne, Orlando, Rinaldo and other heroic figures.

Machine

Wooden and metal puppets controlled with rods and wires.

Stage

Specialized stage systems and regional manipulation techniques.

Memory

Improvisation, oral memory and knowledge of long narrative cycles.

Family

Family-run puppeteering traditions passed between generations.

Heritage

Museums, festivals, cultural institutions and active puppeteering families.

UNESCO protects Opera dei Pupi as intangible cultural heritage: a living system of knowledge and practice, not simply a collection of decorative Sicilian puppets.

The heroic repertoire

Why are Sicilian puppets dressed as knights?

Because the central repertoire of Opera dei Pupi comes from stories about Charlemagne and his paladins, especially Orlando and Rinaldo.

The narrative tradition includes works and cycles associated with:

  • Chanson de Roland;
  • Ludovico Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso;
  • Matteo Maria Boiardo’s Orlando Innamorato;
  • Torquato Tasso;
  • Giusto Lodico’s Storia dei Paladini di Francia.
Orlando Rinaldo Carlo Magno Gano di Maganza Angelica Astolfo Agramante Rodomonte

Opera dei Pupi has never been limited exclusively to Carolingian knights. UNESCO documentation also records stories involving saints, religious subjects, bandits and historical figures. Contemporary companies have extended the form to newer themes as well.

More than spectacle

Why did stories about medieval knights matter so much in Sicily?

Opera dei Pupi became especially popular among working-class Sicilian audiences. The appeal was not simply visual spectacle.

Loyalty Betrayal Justice Courage Sacrifice Honor Power

These themes gave audiences a popular moral universe through which heroic and social conflicts could be understood.

Two principal schools

Palermo vs Catania: two traditions under one name

Palermo and Catania developed distinct schools of Opera dei Pupi. The difference goes far beyond puppet size: the two traditions developed different structures, stage systems, manipulation techniques and divisions of theatrical labor.

Feature Palermo tradition Catania tradition
Historical area Western Sicily Eastern Sicily
Traditional puppet size About 90 cm About 110–130 cm
Traditional weight About 5–10 kg Can reach around 30 kg
Knees Articulated Usually rigid
Manipulation From the sides of the stage From an elevated bridge behind the backdrop
Sword Can often be drawn and sheathed Warrior usually keeps sword in hand
Performance roles Master may combine manipulation and voices Movement and voices can be divided among specialists
Stage tendency Allows greater depth Typically wider and shallower
Measurements are approximate rather than universal. The safest conclusion is that traditional Catania pupi are generally larger and heavier than Palermo pupi.

Western school

What makes Palermo pupi distinctive?

Traditional Palermo puppets are smaller and lighter than Catania figures. Their knees are articulated and the puppeteer traditionally works from the side of the stage.

One master may combine:

  • manipulating the figures;
  • voicing characters;
  • directing the action;
  • improvising dialogue;
  • controlling effects;
  • maintaining narrative continuity.

Eastern school

Why are Catania puppets larger?

Their size is connected to an entirely different theatrical and mechanical system. Their legs are usually rigid, helping transfer part of the weight to the stage floor.

Operators manipulate them from a raised bridge behind the scenery known as the scannappoggiu.

manianti — manipulate the puppets parraturi — traditionally provide male voices parratrici — traditionally provide female voices
Different puppet construction led to different stage architecture and different ways of organizing a performance.

Beyond the two main schools

Are Palermo and Catania the only traditions?

Acireale

Acireale belongs broadly to the eastern Sicilian tradition but developed its own technical characteristics.

The historic Pennisi-Macrì theatre dates to 1887.

Syracuse

Syracuse also developed an eastern variant, and the tradition continues there through contemporary puppeteering families and companies.

Opera dei Pupi has two principal schools, Palermo and Catania, with meaningful local variants including Acireale and Syracuse.

The mechanics

How are Sicilian pupi controlled?

Opera dei Pupi puppets are controlled primarily through rigid rods combined with wires.

Rods

Give the puppeteer strong, direct control.

Joints

Support dramatic and forceful fighting movements.

Armor

Makes characters immediately recognizable on stage.

Swords

Create visual and acoustic spectacle during battles.

A pupo is not simply a decorated object. It is a theatrical machine designed for a specific performance system.

Craftsmanship

How are Sicilian pupi made?

Carved wooden heads Wooden structures Painted faces Articulated joints Metal rods & wires Costumes Worked metal armor

Traditional pupi combine several crafts. Their armor does more than make the figures attractive: it helps identify characters and contributes to the metallic sound and visual intensity of battle scenes.

Craft and performance should not be separated: the way a pupo is built determines what it can do on stage.

The practitioner

What is a puparo?

A puparo is a practitioner of Opera dei Pupi. Depending on regional school and family tradition, the role can include:

Puppeteer Narrator Improviser Director Keeper of repertoire Craftsperson Theatre manager Teacher
UNESCO-recognized heritage includes the knowledge needed to make, manipulate, voice, stage and transmit the theatre.

Popular theatre

Was Opera dei Pupi originally a children’s show?

No. Historically, Opera dei Pupi was popular serialized theatre for community audiences, especially working-class adults.

Its stories could involve:

Wars Betrayal Romance Political power Religion Moral conflict Heroic sacrifice

Popular serial drama

The original Sicilian serial drama

Traditional Opera dei Pupi did not necessarily tell a complete story in one short performance.

Episodes could unfold across several evenings and, in neighborhood theatres, cycles could continue for much longer. Audiences returned to discover what happened next.

Hero Conflict Betrayal Battle Cliffhanger Return tomorrow

Was the dialogue scripted?

Not always in the modern sense. Traditional dialogue was often improvised from the puppeteer’s knowledge of the story cycle and characters rather than read word for word.

In Palermo, painted panels known as scacchi could display several scenes. In Catania, a cartello commonly presented a major scene from the evening’s episode.

What is the connection with cuntu?

Opera dei Pupi and cuntu are related but distinct traditions. Cuntu is Sicilian oral epic storytelling, while Opera dei Pupi adds puppets, scenery, stage mechanics and theatrical action.

A cuntista performs spoken recitation. A cantastorie performs primarily through song.

Shared visual culture

What is the connection with Sicilian carts?

The carretto siciliano, or Sicilian cart, often displays the same heroic narrative world.

Painted scenes of the Paladins of France, battles and chivalric episodes appear in both cart decoration and Opera dei Pupi imagery.

This explains why visitors may encounter the same armored heroes on puppet stages, in museums, on painted carts, in decorative art and in souvenir imagery.

UNESCO recognition

Is Opera dei Pupi UNESCO heritage?

2001 Opera dei Pupi was proclaimed a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
2008 It was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Opera dei Pupi is Intangible Cultural Heritage. It is not a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Twentieth-century crisis

Why did Opera dei Pupi decline?

The traditional theatre model entered a major crisis during the social and economic transformations that followed the 1950s.

New entertainment forms, changing social conditions and the decline of neighborhood theatre culture made long-running cycles harder to sustain.

Preservation

Antonio Pasqualino and the preservation of Opera dei Pupi

Antonio Pasqualino, together with collaborators including Janne Vibaek Pasqualino, began collecting puppets, theatrical materials, scripts and documentation when many historic objects risked being dispersed or destroyed.

1965 Associazione per la conservazione delle tradizioni popolari founded
1975 Museo Internazionale delle Marionette Antonio Pasqualino founded
5,000+ Objects preserved by the museum today

Continuity + adaptation

Did the tradition survive unchanged?

No. Opera dei Pupi survived through continuity and adaptation, not by remaining frozen.

Performance + preservation

The Festival di Morgana

1975 Festival begins
1985 Festival di Morgana name adopted
2025 50th edition

By placing Sicilian puppetry in dialogue with international puppet and visual-theatre traditions, the festival demonstrates that safeguarding does not have to mean cultural isolation.

Living heritage and tourism

Tourism: does it preserve or simplify the tradition?

Tourism can support it

Visitors provide audiences, visibility and income for active practitioners, museums and cultural organizations.

Tourism can simplify it

Adapting performances mainly to tourist expectations can reduce the theatrical complexity demanded by historical local audiences.

A better question How strongly does the performance remain connected to the repertoire, craft, mechanics, families and theatrical knowledge of Opera dei Pupi?

Tradition and innovation

Is Opera dei Pupi frozen in stories about Charlemagne?

No. The Carolingian epic remains central, but the theatrical form has also been adapted to new subjects.

The tradition’s identity does not lie in one fixed script. It lies in the combination of repertoire, performance practice, craft, mechanics, transmission and community knowledge.

Living heritage

How is Opera dei Pupi safeguarded today?

Transmission to new generations Documentation Education Legal protection Craft support Theatre conservation Sustainable tourism Practitioner participation

A detailed safeguarding strategy developed during the 2020s includes measures extending through January 2030.

The task is not merely to preserve old puppets. It is to preserve the conditions in which people can continue to make them, move them, voice them and transmit the tradition.

For visitors

Where should you see Opera dei Pupi: Palermo or Catania?

Palermo

Choose Palermo if you want...

  • the western school;
  • lighter, articulated pupi;
  • major preservation institutions such as Museo Pasqualino;
  • families closely associated with cuntu as well as puppet theatre.
Catania

Choose Catania if you want...

  • the eastern school;
  • traditionally larger and heavier figures;
  • specialized stage mechanics;
  • the distinct division between manipulation and voice performance.
If your trip allows it, seeing both is the clearest way to understand why “Opera dei Pupi” does not describe one uniform theatrical style.

Do you need to understand Italian to enjoy a performance?

Not necessarily. Armor, movement, sword fights, scenery and visual storytelling can make a performance enjoyable without full comprehension.

Understanding Italian adds access to dialogue, improvisation, narrative detail, humor and moral conflict.

Is Opera dei Pupi suitable for children?

Modern performances can be suitable for families, but the tradition should not historically be described as children’s entertainment.

Suitability depends on performance length, language, staging, intensity of battle scenes and the individual company’s format.

The central idea

Opera dei Pupi is more than the puppet

Story

Charlemagne, Orlando, Rinaldo, battles, loyalty and betrayal.

Machine

Rods, wires, armor, joints, swords and stage architecture.

People

Pupari, craftspeople, families, narrators and voice performers.

Society

Neighborhood theatres, working-class audiences and serialized performances.

Heritage

Decline, museums, UNESCO recognition, tourism, adaptation and safeguarding.

Opera dei Pupi is a living theatrical system in which epic literature, oral storytelling, mechanical craftsmanship, family performance traditions, regional stage practices and Sicilian popular culture became inseparable.
